September 3rd – Dr Anastasia Georgiou
At our second academic meeting for the year we are excited to be welcoming Dr Georgiou.
“Clinical approach to the assessment of oral mucosal lesions with discussion on the management of common mucosal pathology.”
In this most welcomed seminar, Dr Georgiou will be taking a very practical approach to oral mucosal lesions that you can implement into your clinic without undertaking a 3-year specialty degree.
Cutting through the confusion, Dr Georgiou’s experience shows in her ability to teach such a challenging topic and improve our everyday management of patients that walk into your rooms.
Not to mention our sensational extensive banquet and beverages for the evening!
About Dr Georgiou
Dr Anastasia Georgiou is a registered Oral Medicine Specialist with over 20 years of expertise in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal conditions across public and private sectors.
Anastasia is committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for her patients with a focus on a patient-cantered approach, education and collaborative management.
She has been involved in teaching, assessment and accreditation for the discipline of Oral Medicine. Anastasia is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, International College of Dentists and Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia.
Her areas of interest are mucosal disease, particularly the oral dermatoses, paediatric oral pathology and potentially malignant disorders.
Anastasia has authored the Paediatric Oral Medicine chapters in Contemporary Oral Medicine textbook and the Handbook of Paediatric Dentistry in addition to contributing author in handbook Oral Medicine – a Clinical Guide.

About Dr Mandikos
BDSc (Hons), MS (New York), Cert Pros, FRACDS, FICD, FPFA
Dr. Mandikos is a registered specialist in Prosthodontics.
Michael received his Bachelor of Dental Science Degree with First Class Honours, from the University of Queensland and in 1998 he completed a three-year Residency Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo (USA), graduating with a Certificate in Prosthodontics and Masters Degree in Biomaterials. He has researched composite resin materials and published research papers in Australian and international journals on clinical and dental materials topics, as well as many clinical technique articles in local dental magazines.
Michael has been a Visiting Specialist Prosthodontist to the University of Queensland Dental School and the Royal Australian Air Force. He is a Reviewer for three dental Journals and is a product evaluator for several dental companies. Michael has presented continuing education programs at dental meetings throughout Australia and Southeast Asia, and also in Greece, Antarctica and the USA.
He maintains a Private Practice limited to Implant and Restorative Dentistry in Graceville in Brisbane’s Inner West, and teaches at the Australian Dental Centre of Excellence in Brisbane.

Common Errors in Aligner Treatment
Aligner treatment is easy and always follows the digital plan.

In this presentation, Dr Mahony will discuss what cases are not suitable for aligner treatment, and what commonly leads to mid-treatment referrals being required.

Who is Dr Derek Mahony?
Dr Derek Mahony, BDS (Syd), MScOrth (Lon), DOrthRCS (Edin), MDOrthRCPS (Glas), MOrthRCS (Eng), FRCD (Can), MOrth RCS (Edin), FICD, IBO, FACD, FICCDE, FIADFE, FPFA, Grad Dip Dental Sleep Medicine (WA), Grad Dip Ortho (Lon),FDSM, MBA (Wharton), Grad Dip (Clear Aligner), Grad Dip ( Dental Sleep Medicine),MSc Clear Aligner Therapy (Lon).
With a name that takes three business cards to present, Dr Mahony is a household name in the orthodontic world.
After completing his Dental Degree at the University of Sydney Dr Mahony proceeded to the United Kingdom where he completed his Masters Degree in Orthodontics at the Eastman Dental Hospital, Institute of Dental Surgery, London.
Further studies led to the successful completion of a Diploma in Orthodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Dr. Mahony has also passed the Royal College of Dentists in Canada post graduate examination in the field of orthodontics.
Dr Mahony has passed examinations leading to a postgraduate qualification in Dentofacial Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow. He has also attained his Membership in Orthodontics qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons, England.
Dr Mahony is a contributing editor to the Journal of Clinical Paediatric Dentistry, International Orthodontic Journal and Spanish Journal of Dentofacial Orthopaedics.
November 6th – Dr Andrew Thorpe

Who is Dr Andrew Thorpe?
Dr Andrew completed his Bachelor of Oral Health and Graduate Diploma of Dentistry from Griffith University in 2008. Dr Andrew received Awards in Academic Excellence for both degrees. Upon completion, he then worked for a decade in North Queensland. During this time, Dr Andrew completed a Graduate Diploma of Dental Implantology, became a Diplomate of the International College of Oral Implantologists, and presented dental implant lectures both within Australia and as far away as the USA and Croatia.
Moving to Sydney, Dr Andrew completed a Graduate Diploma of Clinical Dentistry in Surgical Dentistry and a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Oral Surgery, both at the University of Sydney, fulfilling a long-term dream of registering as a specialist Oral Surgeon.
Dr Andrew was granted the inaugural Award for Academic and Clinical Excellence for his specialty training from the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral Surgeons. Dr Andrew is also a Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and a Lecturer at the University of Sydney.
Dr Andrew has a particular interest in the management of wisdom teeth, dental implantology including dental implant placement and bone grafting, and the complex patient. Dr Andrew’s research endeavours have principally focused on Oral Surgery education and evidence based Oral Surgery practice.
Andrew is also the current president of the AAAD.
September 18th – Dr Tom Huang
Common Findings on Dental X-Rays
Tom graduated from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Dental Science. After working in both the private and public dental sectors, he undertook a three-year specialist training program at the University of Queensland and graduated with a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry specialising in Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology. It included training at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, private radiology practices and at the School of Dentistry.
He has held positions of visiting lecturer, clinical supervisor and external examiner at the University of Queensland, School of Dentistry and the University of Western Australia, School of Dentistry. Tom has also presented topics in radiology and radiography internationally and continues to have research interests in Cone Beam Computed Tomography. He was the Australian regional director for the International Association of Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology (2016-2022) and is currently the president of the Australian Academy of Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology (2023-2024) and a member of the RACDS WA Regional Committee (2021-2025).
Tom has published papers in peer-reviewed journals and is a contributing author of the publication Atlas of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (Wiley-Blackwell, 2017). He is also a co-author of the ADA’s Practical Guide to Dental Radiology (2019)
Our Annual General Meeting will also be held at this event.
